Are You Ready to File Electronically?

Are You Ready to File Electronically?

Make Sure You’re Ready to File 1099s & W-2s Electronically with the IRS

As year-end approaches now is the time to confirm that you have the correct credentials in place to file your 1099s and W-2s electronically. Without proper setup, you may face delays or even risk missing critical filing deadlines.

Note: If you have more than 10 W-2 and 1099 forms combined, you are required to file electronically.

What You Need to Check Now

  1. IRS Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE) System – 1099s
o You’ll need an active Transmitter Control Code (TCC) to file.
o Access to IRS systems now requires a verified ID.me or Login.gov account to log in.
o If you don’t already have a TCC, you must apply through the IRS online portal using one of these secure login services.
  2. SSA Business Services Online (BSO) – W-2s
o Confirm you have a valid BSO User ID and password.
o SSA has also transitioned to requiring Login.gov for secure authentication.
o If you don’t already have access, you’ll need to set up a Login.gov account and link it to your BSO profile.
  3. o Once logged into the BSO please ensure that you have the option “Report Wages to Social Security” if not please request that via of the “Request New Services” link on the left side of the screen.
  4. Password & Access Checks
o Both IRS and SSA systems require regular password resets and multi-factor authentication. Log in now to ensure your credentials are still valid.

Why You Should Act Early
Account verification through ID.me or Login.gov can take time, especially if additional identity proofing is needed. Waiting until January may create unnecessary stress and put your filings at risk. By confirming your access now, you’ll avoid bottlenecks and be ready for year-end reporting.

Next Steps
• Log in to your IRS and SSA accounts today using your ID.me or Login.gov credentials.
• Verify your TCC and BSO access are active.
• Apply now if you don’t yet have electronic filing credentials.

Being proactive with your credentials today will ensure your 1099 and W-2 reporting process runs smoothly.
